Introduction

This art is taken from Gustave Dore’s woodcut of Dante’s Divine Comedy. It is a scene where Beatrice leads Dante into the highest level of heaven. My hope is to lead you on a journey into the mysteries of the Liturgy.

This journey begins with foundations. Once these are laid, we will be ready for what comes next. In the movie Shrek, there is a scene where Shrek (who is an ogre) and Donkey (who is a talking donkey) are having a conversation. Shrek tries to explain to Donkey that ogres are like onions. Donkey asks, “You mean they stink?” Shrek says, “No Donkey. Ogres have layers.” The Divine Service is like an ogre. It doesn't stink but it has layers too.

This peeling back the layers of the Liturgy is designed to be read at your own pace. You can take each article as a devotion for the day or you can run as far as the Spirit draws you. Comeback where you left off. Follow the order as it is laid out. When done reading, and your ready to move on, click on the button to go to the next lesson.

My prayer for you is that the Holy Spirit will enlighten your mind, stir your heart, and create a longing and love for the gifts God gives us in the Divine Service. I hope you will see, believe, love, cherish, and be proud of the Liturgy of Christ's Church and in being Lutheran.
